MUSCAT, JUNE 8
Nama Water Services has invited interested investors to pre-qualify to participate in a competitive process leading to the award of a mandate for the establishment of a high-value industrial project specialising in the manufacture of Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes in the Sultanate of Oman.
This initiative stems from the recommendations of the National Local Content Lab organised with the support of the Oman Investment Authority to drive the localisation of business opportunities. It reflects the government’s broader push to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities in the Sultanate of Oman and thereby reduce reliance on imports.
The establishment of RO membrane manufacturing capacity will represent a strategically important milestone for Oman’s water sector, strengthening the resilience and sustainability of a desalination industry that underpins the nation’s potable water supply. Located in one of the world’s most water-stressed regions, Oman relies heavily on seawater desalination to meet the needs of its growing population, industries and economic development projects. RO membranes are the core component of modern desalination plants, directly influencing operational efficiency, energy consumption and water production costs.
Local production would reduce dependence on imported membranes and global supply chains, enhance security of supply, lower procurement lead times and create opportunities for cost savings over the long term. It would also support the development of a domestic water technology ecosystem, fostering research, innovation, skilled employment and industrial diversification in line with Oman Vision 2040.
Overseeing the management of the water sector is Nama Water Services, the integrated water and wastewater utility responsible for the production, transmission, distribution and supply of potable water, as well as the collection, treatment and reuse of wastewater across much of the country.
The deadline for submission of qualifications for the award is July 2, 2026.
